Web page ranking, or where your site is found in the search results of search engines like google, is the key to free traffic. Think about it, most people find web pages by searching for them, right? I bet that is how you found this page. So, if you want to improve your web page ranking and generate free traffic, the first thing you should take care of is your on page search engine optimization. And before I go further, let me define a couple of terms for you.
Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) – The process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO is generally broken down into two parts – on page SEO and off page SEO.
On Page SEO – Creating your site with the goal of making it search engine friendly. These are factors that are completely within your control.
Off Page SEO – Factors such as incoming links (or backlinks), page rank, anchor text of the incoming links that are not on your site, and therefore somewhat outside of your control. Basically, the search engines look at how many other sites are linking to your page when they are determining your web page ranking. Generally, the more sites linking to your page, the more popular the search engines think that your page is.
As you might have guessed, on page search engine optimization is much easier to do than off page. Unfortunately it is also a much smaller piece of the puzzle, as the search engines consider backlinks more important than onpage factors. However, if you want to have a good web page ranking, you need to pay attention to the on page factors first as it will make a big difference in how long it takes for your page to show up on the search engines and for which keywords you rank for.
